چکیده

-Infrared spectroscopic, X-ray powder diffraction, diffuse reflectance, and electron-spin resonance examination of homoionic bentonite from Sardinia treated with diazomethane indicates that polymethylene was formed in the interlayer position. Polymerization can be attributed to the acidic properties of the residual water in the interlamellar space, depending on the nature of the exchanged ion. The presence of an interlayer polymer causes the clay to assume strong hydrophobic properties. Key Words---Bentonite, Hydrophobic, Infrared spectroscopy, Interlayer, Polymerization.

Free porosity investigation of compacted bentonite using XRD

Many countries intend to use compacted bentonite as a barrier in their deep geological repositories for nuclear waste. In order to describe and predict hydraulic conductivity or radionuclide transport through the bentonite barrier, fundamental understanding of the microstructure of compacted bentonite is needed. This study examined the interlayer swelling and overall microstructure of Wyoming B...

Employing a hydrophobic-bentonite as a highly efficient and versatile catalyst for a green one-pot and rapid synthesis of 4H-benzo-[b]-pyran derivatives

A hydrophobic-bentonite catalyst (cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide-bentonite) has been used as a very mild, neutral, eco-friendly, reusable, non-toxic, low-cost and easily available catalyst. It was prepared by replacing the exchangeable Na+ cations of a homoionic Na–bentonite with cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTMAB) cations. The catalyst was characterized by XRD, BET and SEM. The...

Determination of the Geological Conditions During the Formation of Kaolinite and Bentonite Deposits in NW Alborz Mountains (Pirkoh-Deylaman) of Iran and the Study of Its Practical Properties for Use in the Porcelain Industry

The area under study is located in northern Iran at 36° 47’ latitude and 50° 12' longitude. It is 15 km from southeastern Deylaman. Petrological study of the kaolin mother rock (Eocene age) under a microscope shows that the rock is vitric tuff with a rhyolitic combination containing falcated and embowed glass shards. The thickness of the layer is approximately 20 meters, formed unconformably on...

Adsorption Removal of Humic Acid from Water Using a Modified Algerian Bentonite

In this study, the main objective is the preparation and the characterization of a modified Algerian bentonite based adsorbent by intercalation with hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HDTMA). Natural and modified bentonites were characterized using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The X-ray results indicate that the geometry of the int...
